We work closely together to strategize and develop solutions that will drive long-term impact, and every team member plays an integral role in our firm’s success. Adaptability and openness to diverse viewpoints are essential to success in our organization.

About the Principal Role

The Principal will serve as the lead on multiple client engagements. This role requires exceptional relationship management skills and a demonstrated ability to lead and deliver strong outcomes on high-stakes, complex work. While philanthropy or philanthropy advising expertise is highly beneficial, it is not required. The Principal must be able to set a clear, inspiring vision for client engagements and lead the project team to execute effectively against it. As a Principal, you will be responsible for directing, managing, and coaching the Associates and/or Analysts assigned to your engagement.

The Principal is a mission-critical link between the firm’s Partners, external clients, and internal teams. As a Principal, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring seamless execution and alignment across all fronts—translating high-level strategy into action, supporting client delivery, and enabling the Partners to focus on market-facing activities. You are the connective tissue that keeps client teams operating with clarity, consistency, and impact. This is a highly visible, dynamic position at the heart of the firm’s most important client work.

The Principal will have the following responsibilities and opportunities:

  • Setting the vision, scope, and project plan for engagements and leading execution in a way that demonstrates the ability to crystallize meaningful outcomes for the engagement, design an effective plan to achieve the outcomes, invest others in the plan, and adjust and/or design a new approach when the clients’ needs change or the plan simply isn’t working
  • Managing all aspects of the engagement, including ensuring quality service delivery to the client (client satisfaction), coaching and developing the team in their contributions (team satisfaction), and managing the budget and arranging resources effectively (profitability)
  • Developing a trusting relationship with the client by demonstrating deep listening and empathy, and the ability to meet clients where they are and adapt to their style
  • Navigating the ambiguity that can often come with advising clients by understanding how to unearth assumptions and competing commitments to solve complex challenges
  • Generating meaningful strategic insights, leveraging past experiences and creating new approaches to push the work forward while effectively balancing efficiency (not recreating the wheel and leveraging existing approaches) with innovation (creating something new when it is needed)
  • Leveraging Partners as senior advisors on the engagement in a way that demonstrates the ability to manage up strategically and effectively
  • Identifying, cultivating, and securing new clients on an ongoing basis in order to meet the revenue goals set by you and your manager

This opportunity is for you if…

  • You are a trust builder. Beginning with deep listening, you seek to identify your audience’s interests, values, and goals, whether that’s a team member or a client. You know how to build relationships with a wide range of people, including those whose views are different from your own. You find ways to connect and build trust naturally with your teammates and clients and are committed to serving others. You are an effective manager, balancing support and accountability. You treat others with respect and are also able to engage authentically to negotiate and compromise (when appropriate) in order to make progress.
  • You have credibility as an expert. You demonstrate mastery on a wide range of topics. Your opinion and perspective in areas where you have expertise and experience are respected and sought out. To stay informed, you continually seek out new information and ideas.
  • You can set vision and strategy. With a goal in mind, you develop and articulate a clear vision and identify an initial set of strategies likely to achieve it. You’re also able to adeptly adjust as needed and quickly shift from strategy to execution. You continuously seek ways to improve business and team member performance. You think and plan five steps ahead of where and how the team is currently operating, anticipating the needs of team members and the business. You understand your individual role AND what the broader team is trying to accomplish—it excites and motivates you, and you are committed to ensuring the team succeeds.
  • You are commercially savvy.  You have a knack for identifying emergent business opportunities and creating new business through careful listening and engaging others in shared ideation. You are able to evaluate ideas from both an impact and financial standpoint and make critical decisions about whether and how to proceed.
  • You are a strong communicator. You use clear and concise language. Others have said that your communication is concrete and actionable. You understand the context in which you are communicating and can respond to emails, calls, and requests with the appropriate nuance, given the audience and message. You over-communicate key messages in various ways without judgment, allowing stakeholders to fully absorb what you’re communicating. You leverage questions to unearth assumptions, competing interests, and advance the thinking of the team. You communicate with a level of openness and transparency that allows stakeholders and team members to share candidly with you and push on your ideas.
